Periodontology

Periodontology is a discipline that deals with diseases of the gums and the supporting structures of the tooth such as the alveolar bone and the periodontal ligament.

Symptoms of periodontal disease:

It is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of periodontal disease so that you can act quickly to prevent deterioration of gum health or tooth loss.

The most common symptoms are:

  • Swollen, red or tender gums.

  • Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing.

  • Exposure of the roots of the teeth.

  • Bad breath

  • Loose teeth

What are the different treatments in periodontology?

Scaling and Root Planing:

It aims to remove plaque and tartar around the teeth and under the gumline to slow the progression of periodontal disease in its early stages and promote healing of the tooth's supporting tissues.

Periodontal Surgery:

Periodontal surgery encompasses surgical procedures performed on the supporting tissues of the tooth.

It is indicated after a re-evaluation if root planing is not sufficient to cure periodontal disease.

It aims to:

  • Remove periodontal pockets

  • Remove granulation tissue

  • Reattach the gum to the tooth

Gingival graft:

Gum grafting is a surgical procedure that restores gum tissue damaged by periodontal disease and restores the aesthetics of the teeth.

It involves removing oral mucosa (usually from the dental palate) and then transplanting it to the damaged area.

Among its advantages:

  • Promote bone regeneration around teeth.

  • Preventing the progression of periodontal disease

  • Improve the aesthetics of bare teeth
